Overview: The Backend Engineer will design and develop high-performance API and data processing systems that power real-time decisioning across complex medical datasets. This role focuses on building scalable backend services, optimizing system performance, and supporting data science teams as they deploy machine learning and LLM-driven features into production. The engineer will collaborate across product, underwriting, customer success, and analytics to translate models and business logic into reliable, maintainable software. Success in this role requires strong Python development skills, a deep understanding of cloud-native architectures, and the ability to build APIs and backend components that operate efficiently at scale.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to the design and evolution of backend APIs that enable real-time analysis and decisioning of complex medical data.
• Partner with data science, underwriting, customer success, and product teams to translate requirements into deliverable features and roadmap outputs.
• Enhance the speed, resilience, and scalability of backend services that process large volumes of structured and unstructured healthcare data.
• Support ongoing product updates as machine learning models and LLM-based capabilities are incorporated into the platform.
• Develop clean, reliable code supported by thorough unit and integration testing, along with strong automation practices.
• Engage in code reviews and participate in efforts to refine engineering patterns, tooling, and overall development quality.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional Python development experience with a solid understanding of modern SDLC principles.
• Experience designing or documenting APIs using frameworks or tools such as OpenAPI, Swagger, or FastAPI.
• Hands-on experience with cloud technologies and container orchestration solutions like Kubernetes.
• Proficiency working with containerization tools, particularly Docker.
• Strong background in relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, including experience with ORMs like SQLAlchemy.
• Experience evaluating backend system performance, including profiling latency and conducting load testing to drive optimization.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code solutions, preferably Terraform.
