Job Description Summary
As a Software Engineer on the Braintree Identity team, you’ll help build secure, scalable systems that power authentication and identity management across our products. You’ll collaborate closely with other engineers and partner development teams to deliver seamless experiences for our merchants. Our primary stack includes Ruby on Rails running on AWS across multiple regions.

- Implements tasks within the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), receiving structure and oversight from more experienced staff
- Follows well-established internal conventions and standard procedures
- Understands internal standards & processes an applies them to make technical decisions
- Collaborates with peers, manager, and project lead to gain understanding of tasks and review solutions
- May contribute to code & design reviews
Expected Qualifications
- 1+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Braintree Identity team provides the foundational user management and authentication experiences that enable merchants to interact securely with our platform.
We design, implement, and support the systems that power authentication and authorization (authN/authZ) across Braintree and PayPal. You’ll work closely with product managers and cross-functional teams to help build robust, reliable identity solutions that meet our merchants’ needs.
Your way to impact
You’ll contribute to the design, development, and delivery of high-quality software solutions that enhance our authentication and user management capabilities. Your work will directly support secure and seamless customer experiences across Braintree products.
Your day-to-day
- Design, implement, test, and maintain backend services that power identity and authentication workflows.
- Collaborate with peers, product managers, and senior engineers to refine requirements and ensure smooth feature delivery.
- Write clean, modular, and well-tested code following team standards and best practices.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to maintaining code quality and team consistency.
- Support continuous integration and delivery pipelines by contributing automated tests and ensuring smooth deployments.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues in production systems to maintain reliability and performance.
- Learn from and contribute to discussions about architecture, design, and technical tradeoffs within the team.
- Participate in refactoring and tech debt reduction efforts as guided by senior engineers.
What You Need To Bring
- 2-5 years of professional backend software development experience.
- Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and design patterns.
- Strong skills in Ruby and Rails, or equivalent web frameworks.
- Familiarity with AWS or other cloud platforms.
- Experience with CI/CD environments and testing frameworks.
- Interest in distributed systems and scalable backend architectures.
- Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
- Clear communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
Nice to have
- Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, or other container orchestration tools.
- Exposure to big data or large-scale systems.
- Familiarity with identity and access management concepts (authentication, authorization, OAuth, etc.).
- Enthusiasm for learning from experienced engineers and contributing to a high-performing team.

The U.S. national annual pay range for this role is $100,500 to $173,250
